Common Air Conditioning Problems

July 9, 2014 |

Well, the dog days of summer are finally upon us here in Austin, and with them comes the greatest strain on your air conditioning unit. But, you don’t have to be left in the dark-—and the heat—-when your Austin air conditioning unit starts acting up.

An air conditioning unit is a system comprised of several components. Over the course of 12-15 years of service, any one—-or more—-of those A/C components can fall into disrepair, leading to damage or under-performance. Here are some of the most common A/C symptoms:

• Water pooling by your furnace usually indicates a clogged or disconnected drain. Inspect the a/c drain lines and repair accordingly.
• Reduced a/c airflow can normally be remedied by swapping out your a/c filters. If you have pets, you should change your filters more frequently, perhaps every 30-60 days.
• The air conditioner failing to turn on can many times be traced to the thermostat. Check the batteries, and be sure the thermostat is set to “AC” or cool.
• An increase in electricity bills usually means the air conditioning system isn’t running efficiently. If it isn’t an air conditioning filter issue, it’s possible the condenser fins are obstructed. These fins help cool the coils, and choked fins can deplete performance.
• The a/c shutting off prematurely or running unnecessarily can result from a misplaced thermostat. If the thermostat is mounted in direct sunlight or near an oven, it can cause the air conditioning system to run improperly.
• Lack of cool air coming from your vents can sometimes be attributed to leaking ductwork. Not only does this diminish your system’s cooling power, but it also brings unwanted contaminants into your home, like dust, mold, and allergens.

Many of these issues you can resolve yourself, with little or no DIY experience. Often times, a routine tune-up is just the thing to get your Austin a/c unit back into shape. Not to worry!
