HVAC Repair vs Replacement: 4 Things to Consider

May 1, 2019 |

To repair or replace? That is the question.

We all know that summers in Austin, Texas are, simply put, brutal. Something we may not pay attention to is how hard our air conditioners are working while we’re sitting inside a cool home that’s 30 degrees cooler than the air outside. Texas air conditioners wear down quickly due to the high amount of running hours during the summer and early fall. Before the summer starts, and before you have to make the decision between repairing or replacing your A/C, think about these four things:

Replace at the 10-year mark.

The rule of thumb with replacement in Texas is that you should replace your unit every 10 years. After 10 years, repairing your unit won’t do much for you in terms of longevity. If your Austin air conditioning unit has passed the decade mark, you might be able to repair it for another year or so, but will most likely just run into more problems. At the 10 year mark is also when you usually lose the warranty on your unit. And as an added bonus, Austin Energy will give you a rebate for replacing air conditioners that are 10 years and older. Replace if the cost of the repair is too high.

This seems obvious, but it’s worth noting. Here is a good formula to use to know whether to replace or repair:

(Cost of repair) x (Age of old AC Unit in years) > (Cost of your new AC)

If the cost on the left is greater, replace your AC. If the cost on the right is greater, then repair.

Replace if your energy bills keep rising.

If you’ve noticed that your energy bills keep rising, and the electrical company hasn’t raised the rates, it might be time to replace your air conditioner.

This usually happens with older units that are over 10 years old. A great tool that helps you figure out if you’re spending too much on energy is this program made by Energy Star called Home Energy Yardstick. It provides a free-of-charge assessment of your energy consumption and evaluates your spending. You will need the past year’s worth of energy bills. The process is a little tedious, but it’s a great tool nonetheless.

Repair if you’re under the 10-year mark.

There are very few occasions in which you’ll need to replace an air conditioner that is under 10 years old. There are always exceptions, however, like if the A/C is out of warranty or experiences a catastrophic failure.

A common A/C repair myth is that your unit will need periodic refrigerant “refills”. This is not true. Refrigerant does not get consumed, the only time it gets low is if there is a leak, in which case, it will need to be repaired and replaced.

Replacing refrigerant also comes with an environmental impact. When you replace it, you’re expelling more harmful exhaust into the atmosphere than need be. If your A/C is working fine, you will never need to replace the refrigerant.

If your unit is under 10 years old, usually all you’ll need is a repair. Call us and we’ll be happy to take a look and get to work.
