Prolonging the Life of Your Air Conditioning Unit

August 20, 2013 |

While it hasn’t been the scorching summer of years past here in Austin, your air conditioning unit is still having to work awfully hard. And with at least two months of high 90s and low 100s left in the year, it’s important that you take the proper measures to keep the A/C unit in your Austin home running smoothly.

The goal of any air conditioning system is to get heat and moisture out of the air of your home as quickly and efficiently as possible. Taking the proper preventative measures can keep you from coming home to a hot and humid house. It can also help stave off hundreds or even thousands of dollars in air conditioning repair or replacement.

Keep fresh filters in the vents of your home. Try to change out your A/C filters at least once a month, maybe even twice per month during the dog days of summer.

Ideally, your A/C units would reside in shade. A shaded A/C unit peforms 10-15% better than one that’s baking in the sun all day. If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning unit, be sure to consider this during the installation process.

Additionally, sunlight pouring into your home through the windows heats up your home’s interior and makes the job your air conditioning unit is trying to do that much harder. Drawing the shades, or even installing some sort of solar screen or window tinting can block a lot of the sun’s radiant heat that ends up costing you a lot in energy bills.

It’s generally a good idea to set your thermostat to 80 or 82 degrees during the day when your home is vacant. If you have an aging unit that’s less efficient at removing hot air and moisture, set the thermostat a little lower to prevent the house from getting too hot during the day. If your home is fairly efficient at cooling quickly, you can set the A/C temperature a little higher.

While it might seem antiquated, good old fashioned ceiling fans can go a long way toward making your home feel a lot cooler. Ceiling fans draw air across your skin, drying perspiration, and leaving you feeling 2-4 degrees cooler. But be sure to only activate the ceiling fans when you’re using them, and turn them off when you leave the room.

Like the systems on your vehicle, air conditioning units require proper preventative maintenance. Many of the maintenance efforts you can perform on your own, but there are components that many people neglect.
